Welcome From Program Director
Catherine Moore, M.D.
Welcome and thank you for your interest in the University of Rochester nephrology training program.
We are an ACGME accredited two-year clinical fellowship located in Western New York State. We currently accept three fellows per year for a total of six clinical fellows, and additionally do offer a combined pediatric-adult nephrology fellowship. Fellows’ inpatient clinical activities are at Strong Memorial Hospital, a tertiary/quaternary care referral center for Upstate New York.
We take pride in providing an enriching and supportive learning environment for our trainees, and in maintaining a culture of collaboration and patient-centered care.
Our fellows receive training in the full spectrum of nephrology practice including acute and chronic kidney disease, end stage renal disease and its associated complications, renal transplantation, kidney disease in other solid organ recipients, glomerular disease, critical care nephrology, nephrolithiasis, and renal complications of advanced heart failure. We offer a wide array of dialysis modalities, including continuous renal replacement therapy in our ICU’s, hemodialysis and home dialysis including both peritoneal and home hemodialysis. Our fellows perform many kidney biopsies- both native and transplant - and gain experience in Point-Of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS).
Our two-year program is structured to provide time for research and electives in both years. We work with our trainees to create an experience within this elective time tailored to their career and educational goals. Example electives include hemodialysis access, home dialysis, apheresis, tissue typing, and renal pathology.
We have a diverse and dynamic faculty who are dedicated to education both on the medical wards and through didactic presentations. We have a formal educational curriculum which is constantly updated to align with the changing needs of future nephrologists.
We are particularly proud of our relationships with the palliative care and critical care divisions, and opportunities are available for further training in these areas during and at the conclusion of nephrology fellowship.
In addition to training excellent clinical nephrologists, we strive to instill in our fellows the humanitarian and professional skills that are essential in caring for our complex group of patients.
The quality of life in Rochester is a well-kept secret. It is one of the most affordable and safest places to live. The average commute is 20 minutes (less for most fellows) and the schools in the local suburbs are among the best in the nation. There are many cultural amenities and its location near the Finger Lakes affords wonderful outdoor opportunities as well including hiking, biking, and snow and water sports.
Once again, thank you for your interest. We look forward to communicating with you.
Warmly,
Catherine Moore, MD
