Curriculum
We have a flexible curriculum. Fellows can select between at least two basic options: an equal split between EMG/neuromuscular and EEG/epilepsy, or a program weighted more toward EEG/Epilepsy. We encourage fellows to schedule electives (e.g., use of Botulinum toxin in movement disorders, EPs, IOM) to enhance their career goals. There is also ample time to pursue a clinical research project with one the many clinical investigators. Strong Memorial Hospital fellows receive 20 days of vacation per year and additional time may be allowed for attendance at scientific or medical meetings. There is support to attend national meetings if the fellow is presenting their work.
Typical day in the Electrodiagnostic Laboratories
- Hours: 8 AM to 6 PM
- EMG: 2 patients per fellow per half day
- EEG: 10 studies per fellow per half day
- Neurology residents also rotate on the services
Outpatient Clinic Experience
- One half day of continuity clinic per week
- Ability to work with core faculty throughout the year
Didactics and Conferences
Daily EMG Sign-out Rounds
An interactive 30 – 60 minute review of instructive cases seen in the EMG laboratory emphasizing clinical and electrodiagnostic teaching points.
Neurology Grand Rounds (Wednesday at Noon)
A formal presentation is given either live, virtually, or hybrid by an expert on topics pertinent to furthering the educational gap within the Neurology Department.
Clinical Neurophysiology & Neuromuscular EMG Conference (10 AM – 12 PM Friday)
A weekly lecture series targeted to the clinical neurophysiology fellows to review the fundamentals of EMG, nerve conduction studies, peripheral anatomy, neuropathology, clinical and electrodiagnostic aspects of the major nerve and muscle diseases.
Clinical Neurophysiology and Epilepsy Conference (12 PM Friday)
A weekly lecture series targeted towards the clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy fellows to review the fundamentals of clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy at a fellow/faculty level.
Monthly Clinical Neurophysiology and Epilepsy Journal Clubs (dinner provided)
These are either live or in Zoom format. This is a review of the classic or new literature where fellows present seminal trials and practice-defining studies of the field and explore new topics in neuromuscular and epilepsy literature.
Monthly Neuromuscular Journal Clubs (8 AM 2nd Friday of every month)
These are either live or in Zoom format once a month. This is a review of the classic or new literature where fellows present seminal trials and practice-defining studies of the field and explore new topics in neuromuscular and epilepsy literature.
Call Responsibilities
There is no in-house evening or weekend call. Fellows share home-call coverage of after-hours clinic calls with the epilepsy fellows, approximately 1 week per month.
Program Benefits
- Vacation – Fellows at URMC receive 20 days of vacation. There are no on-site clinical responsibilities on weekends or during the 9 University holidays.
- Educational Leave – Fellows are allowed to attend a conference without using vacation if they are presenting work at the conference or participating in a fellow-directed program. Travel/registration expenses may be submitted for reimbursement.
- Professional Education Stipend – Fellows receive a $500 educational allowance to be used towards purchasing anything pertaining to furthering their education in the Clinical Neurophysiology field. In addition, fellows are provided ACNS junior membership.
