About the Program
This fellowship provides a full range of addiction psychiatry training experiences, set within robust clinical services that provide wholistic, person-centered care.
Program strengths include exposure to methadone prescribing through our opioid treatment program, inpatient and outpatient addiction consultation, adolescent and young adult treatment, and experiences in the overlap between pain and addiction.
Educational offerings include didactic series, journal club, interdisciplinary team rounds and weekly departmental grand rounds. The fellow is also heavily involved in teaching medical students and residents. Addiction psychiatry fellows are also required to complete a scholarly activity suitable for a poster presentation, which is included at the Department's Annual Poster Day.
Clinical Rotations
Strong Recovery
This is the primary clinic site for the addiction psychiatry fellowship. Fellows will be immersed in a rich, diverse clinical environment, working with our multi-disciplinary team to provide a full range of outpatient addiction psychiatry services. Fellows will be trained in the prescription and management of all FDA approved medications for addiction treatment (MAT), including medications for opioid use disorder - MOUD (methadone, buprenorphine, and long-acting injectable formulations of buprenorphine and naltrexone). Additionally, fellows will gain skills in the evaluation and management of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Through engagement with a team of multi-disciplinary addiction professionals, fellows will develop comprehensive treatment plans encompassing psychotherapeutic, psychopharmacologic, and psychosocial treatment modalities including addressing social determinants of health.
Inpatient Addiction Medicine Consultation Service
During this rotation, fellows will be trained to perform assessments and provide consulting recommendations for patients with acute addiction treatment needs who are admitted on our medical and surgical hospital services. Supervised by addiction medicine and toxicology attendings, fellows will receive training in acute withdrawal management, buprenorphine induction and micro-induction, and hospital-based methadone initiation for withdrawal management in general medical settings.
Norris Addiction Treatment Center
Norris ATC is a state-certified addiction treatment program that provides a safe and stable environment to promote recovery from substance use and gambling disorders. Specialties include treatment of deaf and hard of hearing populations as well as individuals with co-occurring disorders. This is the primary inpatient addiction treatment rotation for fellows.
SUMMITS Unit (Substance Use, Infection Treatment, and Support)
The SUMMITS unit opened is a one-of-a-kind hospital unit committed to providing acute medical care to people who have substance use disorders and need to stay in the hospital for long courses of treatment. The design of SUMMITS aims to provide comfort and relief during long hospitalizations, with addiction counseling and connections to early recovery resources available during and after the hospital stay. This unique clinical experience will provide fellows specialized training in addressing medical sequelae of addiction, while utilizing a harm-reduction model to engage patients early in their course of recovery.
