How to Apply
Applying for financial aid is an annual process which takes place in the spring prior to the academic year for which financial assistance is sought.
- Prospective Students: To assure full consideration for all types of financial assistance, applications for financial aid should be submitted by March 1. Individuals offered admission whose financial aid applications are complete by March 1 can expect to hear from the Financial Aid Office by mid-April.
- Continuing Students: To assure full consideration for all types of financial assistance, applications for financial aid should be submitted by April 1. Individuals whose financial aid applications are complete by April 1 can expect to hear from the Financial Aid Office starting mid-May.
Institutional Financial Aid & Federal Loans
For applicants wishing to apply for all available sources of financial aid (institutional need-based scholarships, federal, private), please do the following:
- Complete the University of Rochester School of Medicine Financial Aid Application.
- Submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at www.studentaid.gov
- In order to file this option via the Web, a Federal Student Aid account is required. If you have lost your account information, you can request your login and/or password at www.studentaid.gov
- If you wish to file a paper FAFSA, please call 1-800-433-3243 to request one.
- UR SMD’s FAFSA code number is G24601.
- Submit the CSS Profile. Please note: Parental information is required for applying for institutional need-based assistance. The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry’s Profile code is 2915.
- You may file on the web at https://student.collegeboard.org/profile. Visit the website for further instructions.
- For questions/technical difficulties with the CSS Profile, please contact the College Board’s Customer Support at (305) 420-3670.
- Non-Custodial CSS Profile: If your parents are divorced, separated, never married, or are living separately, we require your non-custodial parent to complete the Non-Custodial CSS Profile. Once your custodial parent completes the CSS Profile, you will be provided with a CSS ID and temporary password for your non-custodial parent to log into the Non-Custodial CSS Profile application.
- Submit 2023 Tax Returns & W2s. Submit to the Financial Aid Office copies of signed 2023 federal tax returns, all attached schedules/forms, and W2(s) for parent(s), student, and student’s spouse (if applicable).
Federal Financial Aid Only
For applicants wishing to apply for federal financial aid resources only (federal loans, federal work-study), please complete the following:
- Complete the University of Rochester School of Medicine Financial Aid Application.
- Submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at www.studentaid.gov
- In order to file this option via the Web, a Federal Student Aid account is required. If you have lost your account information, you can request your login and/or password at www.studentaid.gov
- If you wish to file a paper FAFSA, please call 1-800-433-3243 to request one.

Document Submission
The privacy and safety of your personal information is extremely important to us. The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry offers a Secure Document Upload system for your safety and convenience. This system will allow you to upload documents you are required to submit to our office in a secure fashion, particularly documents such as tax returns that contain social security numbers and other personally identifiable information (PII).
Please do not email documents to the Financial Aid Office that contain social security numbers, or other personally identifiable information.
Financial Aid Package Notification
Following the submission of all financial aid application materials, the Financial Aid Office will begin processing your financial aid. Financial Aid Offer letters will be emailed to admitted Phase 1 MD students on a rolling basis, beginning in late March. Financial Aid Offer letters will be emailed to returning students beginning mid-May. Each financial aid recipient is asked to acknowledge the aid Financial Aid Offer within 30 days of receipt of the Financial Aid Offer letter to avoid delays.
