Welcoming Culture & Community

The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics is committed to establishing and maintaining a learning and research environment that is welcoming and supportive for people with the broadest possible range of perspectives.  We recognize that fostering a welcoming culture for people with varied interests and backgrounds leads to the most successful conduct of teaching, research, and administration and, thus, value the contributions of a population of students, faculty, and staff that reflects the richness of a pluralistic society. In keeping with these views, we are committed to transparent hiring processes and to providing impartial access to educational resources that will maximize access to opportunities for every member of the department.

To provide the best possible working environment, the Department endeavors to maintain a collegial, collaborative environment that is free from harassment, discrimination, bullying, and other intolerant behaviors. Based on university-wide policy, a clear set of procedures has been established for Department members to pursue if they feel that these standards have been violated. Our overall aim is to promote mutual respect and nondiscriminatory treatment that will allow all students, faculty, and employees to feel valued and respected. The Department has also appointed a Culture and Community representative responsible for disseminating and implementing procedures relevant to this aim.
