UNYTE to Host Virtual Scientific Session: Advancing Translational Science in Rural Health Research

The Upstate New York Translational Research Network (UNYTE) will host a virtual seminar, “Advancing Translational Science in Rural Health Research” on Wednesday, November 1 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Translational science researchers from across New York State will share and explore methods to increase the participation of rural populations in translational health research. The event is free and open to members of participating UNYTE institutions, including the University of Rochester. Registration is now live.

“Our rural populations face unique and significant challenges in accessing clinical trials and other clinical research opportunities,” said Karen Wilson, MD, MPH, co-director of UR CTSI. “This symposium is a critical opportunity to bring together researchers from across New York State to explore opportunities to increase engagement with this important community.”

The event includes presentations and discussion on rural health research, digital health technologies and teleresearch, and extending the reach of medical studies to engage rural populations.

Gary Noronha, MD, director of UNYTE and Martin Zand, MD, PhD, co-director of UR CTSI will deliver the opening remarks. Xinzhi Zhang, MD, PhD, FACE, the branch chief of the Health Inequities and Global Health Branch at the Center for Translational Research and Implementation Science at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute will be the keynote speaker, presenting “Transformative Rural Health Research.”

The mission of UNYTE is to assist faculty and trainees from member institutions to increase the quality and quantity of translational research in the Upstate New York region. This includes assessing, accessing, and sharing expertise, technologies, services, and curricula between member institutions to foster collaborative research, eliminate resource redundancy, and enhance the two-way transfer of information between basic scientists and clinical investigators. UNYTE member institutions include centers of basic research and translational science, healthcare providers, and clinical research programs.
