Ways to Cope
Everyone copes with life differently. If there is something you do at home that really helps you relax and find comfort, it will probably help you in the hospital as well.
-
Identify relaxation techniques that work for you, such as deep breathing, meditation or music. Your Child Life Specialist can teach you some of these techniques if you would like.
-
Negotiate for some private time without any family, friends or unnecessary medical interruptions.
-
Write about your experiences in a journal.
-
Sleep.
-
Decorate your room with artwork, cards from friends, photos, etc.
-
Participate in scheduled activities and groups and meet some of the other teens in the hospital.
-
Do your homework. The more you get done, the less you have to stress about it.
-
Identify people you feel comfortable talking about your experiences with.
-
Ask for tasks that you can do for yourself, such as bandage changing.
-
Plan time for visitors. Stay connected with your friends, either in person or electronically.
-
Remind people to knock on your door before they come in.
