Keeping Up With School

One of the biggest concerns for many adolescents in the hospital is the amount of school being missed. Please do not let this be a big worry. Ask your doctor, nurse or Child Life Specialist if you are eligible for tutoring services. He or she will be able to work with you and your school in coordinating this. If you are coming in for surgery and know that you will be out of school for an extended length of time, let your health care team know that you will need tutoring services set up for you.

photoWe will:

  • Start the process by getting a note from your doctor
  • Help you if you are having surgery and need plans set up to complete school work from home
  • Provide space for you to complete your school work. If you can be up and about, we have a school room available.
  • We are able to accommodate for testing such as NYS Regents with a proctor, no matter the length of your stay.
  • Discuss 504 plans or your IEP if applicable.
  • Talk with you about the transition back to school after your stay.

If you still have questions or concerns about this, contact your Child Life Specialist who will be able to help you find answers to your questions.
