Family & Support People

- Families may designate up to 4 approved support people who may visit when parents/ legal guardians are not present. Names must be provided to the unit secretary in advance upon admission. Support people must be 18 years or older.
- A maximum of 4 people—including parents, legal guardians, and designated support people—are allowed on the 6th floor at one time from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. Depending on the child’s condition, the treatment team or unit leadership may limit bedside access.
- In the PCCC on the day of cardiac surgery, up to 6 family members may wait together in the 6th floor family waiting room.
- All visitors must switch out in the main hospital lobby.
- Health Restrictions: Visitors with symptoms of illness, including but not limited to colds, coughs, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or other infections, may not visit due to the potential harm to your child. Please note that the visitation policy may change during flu season or other health concerns in the Rochester community.
- To protect your child from infections, everyone must wash their hands prior to entering the PICU and PCCC.
Sibling Visitation
- Siblings may visit with a parent/guardian. Visits are brief, supervised, and based on the child’s condition. Additional restrictions may apply based on the patient’s acuity.
- Non-sibling children over the age of 12 may visit with adult supervision.
- If your child is in the Cardiac Bay (Rooms 23-28), siblings must be age 5 and older in order to visit
- Bedside Procedures: The PICU & PCCC teams may ask parents/guardians, support people, and visitors to leave the bedside if necessary. During surgical procedures, admissions from the operating room, and emergencies, visitors & support people will be directed to the family waiting room and will be called back as soon as able.
- To ensure a calm nighttime environment, only 2 people may be at the bedside from 8:00 pm to 8:00 am.
- Sleeping accommodations for parents/legal guardians/support person(s) will be provided for 1 person in the Cardiac Bay (23-28) and 2 people in the private, stem rooms (13-22). Please understand that frequent assessments and 24-hour care may cause interruptions to rest.
Room Guidelines
- Only covered drinks are allowed at the bedside. Visitors are welcome to eat in the stem rooms only if the patient is also able to eat.
- Only the patient is allowed to eat in the Cardiac Bay.
- We ask that you keep the room clean and clutter-free so the medical team can easily access your child. You may bring in a few personal items (e.g., books, small stuffed animals), but please limit the number. All belongings (clothes, blankets, etc.) should fit in the cupboard or drawer under the couch. We ask that you label all items with the child’s first and last name.
- No latex balloons, live flowers, or plants are allowed on the unit. Foil balloons may be taped outside your child’s door for them to enjoy through their window.
- Food menus are available at the secretary desk, and the secretary will inform you when your food arrives. There is a refrigerator in the family waiting room for personal food storage. Please label your items with your name and date.
- For patient safety, only medical personnel may adjust or silence any alarms, tubing, medical devices, etc.
- For privacy of other patients and staff, please be mindful when photographing or videotaping your child. Staff and other patients may not be recorded without their specific knowledge and permission.
Our Staff
- Our staff use smartphones in order to efficiently communicate for patient care reasons. Please keep in mind that this is an important device in providing the best patient care when you see staff on the phone calling or texting.
These guidelines are in place to ensure the safety and comfort of both you and your child. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to speak with any member of your child’s healthcare team. We value your input and encourage you to actively participate in your child’s care.
