Golisano Children's Hospital building, Rochester, NYBuild an Anti-Racism Infrastructure

The Department of Pediatrics will build the infrastructure that fosters anti-racism in everyday work and patient interactions across all seven of our strategic plans pillars of education, patient care, research, community, population health, digital health, and culture.

Initiatives

Leadership

  • Dr. Kate Greenberg serves as our Vice Chair for Equity and Inclusion - appointed in 2018, she will continue to provide support for the anti-racism initiatives across Golisano Children’s Hospital 5 year strategic plan, including an EARAP Dashboard with quarterly reporting of meaningful, outcomes-oriented metrics
  • We have engaged local experts in anti-racism capacity building, equity strategic planning, and restorative justice to enhance our skills and abilities, and to grow diverse leaders from within our faculty and staff
  • Dr. Shaun Nelms from the Warner School has been named as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Pediatrics, the first of what we anticipate will be many community leaders who will help guide us in our mission and vision

Accountability

  • Creation of a Departmental Conciliator position to help with neutral problem-solving for trainees, staff, and faculty who are experiencing ongoing conflict or bias with their immediate leadership and/or colleagues
  • Institution of comprehensive annual evaluations to provide feedback for faculty leadership, including explicit feedback about inclusive climate and culture
  • Inclusion of the Vice Chair for Equity and Inclusion on leadership search committees, providing more resources for universal implicit bias trainings, and tracking equity and inclusion from application to interview, job offer, and acceptance

Climate

  • Adopt the IDEAS (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Anti-Racism, and Social Justice) name and mission for a faculty, staff, and trainee council, structured with non-hierarchical leadership and promoting equity and inclusion for both our GCH community and our community of patients and families
  • Support and prioritize annual Anti-Racism and Social Justice Projects in each clinical division in Pediatrics 
  • Planned implementation of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) processes to guide the anti-racism initiatives by clinical division and within the institutional strategic plan
