Magnesium-Rich Foods
Magnesium is an important mineral used in our bodies to support metabolism, use of energy, the work of the muscles, and use of protein. Although magnesium-deficiency is rare, it can occur in people whose ability to absorb magnesium is decreased due to surgery, severe burns, malabsorption, certain medications, or low blood levels of calcium.
If your child's doctor has recommended adding magnesium-rich foods to your child's diet, following are some suggestions:
-
Soy products (milk, flour, tofu)
-
Legumes and seeds
-
Nuts (almonds, cashews, Brazil nuts)
-
Peanuts and peanut butter
-
Whole grain breads and cereals (brown rice, millet)
-
Fruit (bananas, dried apricots, etc.)
-
Vegetables, particularly dark green, leafy vegetables (artichokes, chard, beet greens, avocados, etc.)
-
Dried beans (lima, black-eyed peas, navy)
