A Lifeline in the Division of Breastfeeding & Lactation

Born almost three months early, Kennedy faced serious challenges right away. After Kennedy was able to go home from the NICU, she soon developed feeding issues. During this exhausting process, Alex found critical support from Casey Rosen-Carole, chief of the Division of Breastfeeding & Lactation Medicine.

“There were so many specialists involved, and Casey was the one who made sense of it all,” Alex said. “She tied everything together, ensuring that each specialist’s input was part of a cohesive plan. When the anxiety of it all felt overwhelming, she helped us figure out a way forward. I can’t say enough about her team.”

There’s no money to study breastfeeding or provide care. There are packs of angry influencers and others on social media ready to vilify anyone who addresses it in clinical terms. Perhaps most dispiriting of all is that breastfeeding is so misunderstood in the medical community; problems encountered during breastfeeding are too often misdiagnosed and mistreated.

That’s according to a group of mostly female experts who, despite these obstacles — and also because of them — are persisting in their quest to further a novel lactation subspecialty in women’s health, offering physicians board certification.

LauraAnne Hirschler, BS, OMS4, is a fourth-year medical student and liver transplant survivor. As an aspiring family medicine physician with an interest in breastfeeding and lactation medicine, her personal journey taking tacrolimus and desiring a family in the future inspired her to learn more about taking tacrolimus while breastfeeding in the hopes of helping other transplant recipients and their families.
